Match Trivia
Scottish League match played at Ibrox Park, on Saturday before 15,000 spectators. Reid and Bennett scored for Rangers in quick succession in the first half, and Neil for Kilmarnock in the concluding portion. Kilmarnock are to be commended for their splendid uphill play. After being, so to speak, run off their feet, they seemed to find their bearings, and Rangers were hard put to it to retain their lead. There was nothing really brilliant about the play, the exhibition at times being decidedly dull and uninteresting. Rangers’ forwards early on took matters in hand, and found it quite easy to get within shooting distance of Millar. Bennett led off the attack with the ball that topped the crossbar, and Willie Reid thereafter kept popping in dangerous shots. Kilmarnock were kept so much on the defensive that their forwards, lying well back, had a bit to travel when they did get the ball. However, they kept the ball nicely ‘on the floor,’ and Lock had to be ever on the alert. The first goal was pretty effort, though Reid was just a trifle lucky in getting the chance. A clearance from Rangers’ rear lines was intercepted by Shortt, who, instead of heading forward, inadvertently placed the ball towards Reid, who immediately fastened on, and tricking W Cunningham and Mitchell shot a splendid goal. In less than a couple of minutes Bennett had added a second. The credit of the point was due to Gordon, who, going off on one of his forward expeditions, raced to the corner flag, and squaring inches inside, Bennett managed to get at the ball at the post, Millar having no chance to save. Thus at the interval the ‘Light Blues’ led by 2 goal to nil a score they looked like largely augmenting by the manner of their second half resumption. Paterson, to whom most of the play was centred, was completely off hid game. He would persist in stopping and turning in a tantalising manner, when by going right on and centreing he would have served his side better. Then came Kilmarnock’s goal. McKellar lost no time in centreing from the line, and Neil scored quite a clever goal. To the finish Rangers were well stretched, the backs not being too safe when under pressure. Just on the stroke of time Cairns was brought down when well on his way for a run through. Kilmarnock’s changes worked well. Millar made a splendid debut, the ex-Larkhall Thistle custodian, in such a nerve-trying game, coming out with honours W Cunningham, to my mind was the best back on the field, while A Cunningham, although playing a strong game at centre-half, would have been of more value in the forward line. Of the men in front, Morton, McKellar and McCurdie was best, the right wing pair only coming into notice late in the game. As regards Rangers, Lock was safe, the backs, as already mentioned, not to decisive, Logan worked hard throughout, Gordon being the most spectacular of the lot, although still inclined to leave his lines open when going off on his own. Reid was not supplied with the proper scoring centres, the majority of the balls being placed either short or behind him. Cairns was quite the most thrustful of the five.
