Match Trivia

While Rangers had to face up to Rugby Park with four of their regulars engaged in International warfare, Kilmarnock had also their team troubles, for neither Mitchell, Cunningham, nor Goodwin was fir to turn out. Play never touched a high standard, rather the reverse, due in a measure to a lot of unnecessary rough work, which unfortunately crept into the game ere the players had got properly settled. Neither side was blameless in this respect, but the home players somehow fared the worst when the give-and-take idea was being indulged in. Campbell, Hendry, Hogg and Bennett were making their first appearances in the League team after a long absence, and neither spared himself in his endeavours to justify the selection. Murray and Brown on the other side were also affected by the same conditions. Templeton, who is due at Wrexham to-day, made it early evident that he was not going to have the same misfortune as befell him a couple of years ago when he was unable to play against Wales as the result of an accident, fir he kept well in his position, and made good use of the ball when it came to him. The first goal accrued from some heady play on his part, Maxwell getting his head to the ball and beating Hempsey. Rangers replied with some telling work, and had got on the lead before half-time through Goodwin and Paterson, the latter’s shot being a capital effort, which deceived Blair. Both sides added a goal to their total in the concluding portion, Parker getting Rangers’ with a solo effort, while A Cunningham had Kilmarnock’s as the result of a penalty. The winners were a bit fortunate to come out of the game with two points but possibly the fact that they had much at stake made them the more determined side. Neither goalkeeper set the heather on fire, for Blair was at fault in allowing Paterson’s shot pass him, and Hempsey was not impressive. Campbell was slow and Brown unsteady, the honours at back being equally shared by Murray and Ormonde. The visiting halves were just a shade in front of the home lot, Brown, Galt and Hendry all putting in some hard. Duff wrought untiringly, Shortt found a tartar in Paterson, and Steele failed when it came to forcing matters. Maxwell, up the time he was injured, was not bettered by any forward playing; Cunningham (also injured) did well in a new position. Culley is not quite himself yet, while Dickie is paying the penalty of greatness. Templeton looked as if he could have been doing with more of the ball. Paterson and Goodwin shared the honours in the Rangers front line, both being extremely clever. Parker kept his place, and required much attention. Bennett was obviously not risking too much, and Hogg looked like one who had been out of the game for a time.
