Match Trivia

But for the unfortunate break-down in the weather on Saturday Hampden, large and all as it is, would have been comfortably filled, for there are no more popular visitors there than the Rangers from Ibrox. Even as it was, however, there would be quite ten thousand present, and they were treated to one of those games which rivets the attention all through the ninety minutes. Chances cane the way of the Rangers’ sharpshooters, and, as often or not, it was more by luck than good guidance that the home goal was preserved intact, yet the fact remains that after half an hour’s play the somewhat mixed eleven sporting the QP colours were only a goal to the bad, scored by Reid in characteristic fashion. Spasmodic spurts by the Hampden forwards had taken place on occasions, and it must be admitted that there was always an element of danger in the visits, short as they were, and when from one of these Walker got the ball, travelled as yard or so, and then squared the game from close in, the cheer that greeted the effort showed how hugely it was appreciated. Resuming at one-all, the Rangers were not long once more taking the lead, and it was old friend Bowie that did the damage. A swift, high ball into the goal area from Goodwin gave him his opportunity to head past Kerr, and shortly after Todd made his only mistake of the game when he clean missed his return and Smith had little difficulty in putting the champions two up. Gamely the Queen’s struggled on, forced a corner, and Garvie shot quite one of the finest goals after the ball had been sent out by Farrington. At five minutes to go a miscalculation on the part of the referee caused the game to be stopped, and the players and officials retired to the pavilion. The crows, however, knew what was due them, and few made to leave the field, an incessant shouting being kept up meantime. They got their five minutes, as after a second or so the teams reappeared and finished the game, which left the Rangers just winning, and no more, by the narrow margin of the odd goal in five
