Match Trivia

The weather conditions were all against the attendance at Ibrox on Saturday, and the crowd was a comparatively poor one when the game started. Rangers were early dangerous, and Hogg, betraying lively form on the right had frequent centres that sorely tried the Hearts’ defence. Walker and Sinclair were the first to make any material progress for the ‘Maroons,’ but they found McKenzie a stubborn obstacle, and Lock was rarely troubled. Alex Smith had a telling run for the Rangers, and a smart cross to Reid was almost rushed through by the Rangers centre, the ball just finding the wrong side of the post. Sinclair gave Lock his first fright with a shot that just travelled wide, but the Rangers mainly monopolised the chances going, though they had little luck attendant. Their goal came when the game was some half-an-hour old, a long try by Stark being intercepted by McPherson, and deftly sent past Muir. Half-time found the game in favour of the Rangers by 1-0, and the Hearts resumed spiritedly to get on level terms. There was, however, little power behind their efforts, and for long the Rangers maintained a keen pressure on Muir’s goal, which, however, escaped time and again. Hogg, Reid and McPherson had good individual tries that were quite worthy of reward, and with Alex Smith centring in his old deadly style, the Hearts’ defence were kept busy. For a time after this Hearts’ forward play improved, and Lock had to exert himself to some purpose, but nothing came amiss to him, and the game again veered in favour of the Rangers, who eventually won by the odd goal
