Match Trivia
At Ibrox Park, Govan estimated attendance 45,000, drawings (gate and stands) £1280. In the early minutes Adams saved from Bennett, but the Queen’s forwards transferring play Rennie had to throw himself full length to turn out a shot from Mansfield. Rangers were the cleverer side, and from a mix-up between the backs, McPherson scored the only goal of the game. Neither side played good football, the forwards quite failing to settle to the game. Rangers had the better of the play, the amateurs only being dangerous on the left wing, but even the winners with their slight superiority were not good. Before halftime Campbell had a goal disallowed for off-side. Five minutes after the restart the Rangers centre scored what appeared to be a legitimate goal the ball being passed back to him by Smith, but again off-side was given. With Gilchrist lame and off the field the Queen’s Park improved, and only the fine defence of Stark and May prevented the amateurs getting on level terms. Adam saved a good shot from Campbell and followed with a brilliant save from a penalty kick taken by Bennett, but towards the finish Rennie had most to do. The defence of the Rangers held out, and the Govan club deservedly entered the fourth round
