Match Trivia
The undecided tie in the Glasgow Charity Cup completion between these clubs was replayed last night on Hampden Park. Both teams played their latest captures, Rangers being Murray (late of Aberdeen) at centre and Gilchrist (late of Third Lanark) at inside right, while Third Lanark had Johnstone (late of Swindon Town) at outside-right. Notwithstanding the fact that recent rains had rendered the ground very heavy the game was a very good one throughout, and the feature was the display of the Ibrox front rank, which showed better combination than in recent matches. At the opening Third were the smarter lot, and their dash for a time seemed to unsettle the Rangers, the halves being a trifle shaky in their movements. Third Lanark continued to press, and about twenty minutes after the start Sloan, from thirty yards out scored their first point with a grand shot. Ten minutes later Gordon also with a long shot equalised for Rangers. Both points were scored by half-backs, and in both cases the goalkeepers might have saved. Brownlie being particular surprised when he found the ball in the net. After this Rangers front rank settled down to fine play, and ten minutes from the interval Murray from a nice pass from Alex Smith, headed the ball cleverly past Brownlie. In the closing minutes of this portion Brownlie was cheered for saving a hard shot from Gilchrist. Interval – Rangers 2: Third Lanark 1. Play in the second half was again fast and at times a trifle forcible, a player on each side having to be cautioned by the referee. The Rangers front rank kept up their dash and combination, and as a result Brownlie, Barr and Hill were kept busy defending. Ten minutes from the restart Campbell added a third goal for Rangers with a shot that Brownlie had no chance of saving. Rangers continued to do most of the pressing, Gilchrist, Murray and Campbell having good tries at Brownlie. Most of the best work on the Third’s side came from Johnstone and Kidd, but the Rangers backs gave them little chance of getting near Rennie, and play continued to be mostly in the vicinity of the Third Lanark goal. Three minutes from time Kidd made a plucky attempt to get through, and evaded several players, but was brought up near goal by Craig. Result – Rangers 3 goals: Third Lanark 1. Estimated attendance 12,000, gate money £300; stands £30 – total £330. The drawings at Saturday game between the clubs was £528, making the total for the two games £853.
