Match Trivia
The game at Douglas Park was the most interesting and exciting seen on the ground this season. There was not a dull moment, and in the second half there were some lively incidents especially following the knocking off of a finely taken goal by McLean. The Rangers were disappointing, and on the day’s play they were fortunate to escape defeat. Less than five minutes remained when McDonald pulled the game out of the fire by heading through a cross from Smith. The early stages promised well for the Ibrox men, whose halves forced play in commendable fashion. Several of the Rangers forwards were at fault at the goalmouth, and half an hour had gone before Smith got in an accurate centre, and Livingstone, following a palpable handle by McDonald, easily netted. The home men had much the best of matters in the second half. Atkinson equalised in ten minutes. The Rangers defence was very shaky at this time, and there was no surprise when after sustained pressure, McLean put the Academicals ahead. The closing minutes were in favour of the Rangers, and McDonald goal came as a big relief to their following. The Academicals gave a vastly improved display, and there was not a failure in the side. Slavin kept a splendid goal, and the backs were a good bit ahead of the Rangers pair, although for power in returning the ball the honour lay with Campbell and Hendry. Roxburgh gave a stylish display, and took no risks whatever. Brownlie had a warm pair to deal with, but he came out of the ordeal with credit. As a trio the Rangers middle line was ahead of the home lot, Galt and May being especially noticeable. McIntyre and Ferguson were the best of the home lot. The Rangers attack made a poor impression. Speirs failed to balance the line, and there was far too much finessing for position with such a heavy ball. Livingstone was seldom in evidence; Smith and Kyle were always dangerous, Kyle being especially enterprising. It is a long time sine the Academicals forwards have preformed so well. McGraw’s inclusion in the centre was a profitable move, his energy and dash frequently disconcerting the opposing defence. The most successful player in the line; however was Finlay McLean, who gave his best display this season. He was capitally supported by Wardrop. The left-wingers were also in good form. In Newbigging’s absence Hadden preformed pluckily in the Rangers goal. He is however to the small side.
