Match Trivia
Notwithstanding the fears to the contrary, the Rangers had little difficulty in disposing of Galston – who showed commendable loyalty to their supporters in adhering to the luck, which the ballot bestowed upon them by playing the tie on their own ground. Only in the first half did the home lot trouble their opponenets to any great extent, and then it was not so much that they were dangerous, but that they defended well, and kept out the Rangers till nearly halftime, when an unfortunate slip by one of the backs resulted in his putting the slippery ball through his own goal. The game prior to that had been stubbornly fought out chiefly on the Galston half of the field. Rarely did their forwards show any combination, and when they did get near Newbigging it was by the kick and rush game. Morton was the cleverest player of the home five, and on one occasion he brought out Newbigging’s splendid saving qualities by a deceptive shot. On the other hand Livingstone on one occasion netted the ball, and had his ire raised by the referee granting a free kick to the opposing side. It as in the last twenty minutes of the game however, that the superiority of the Rangers was seen. By that time the locals were played out, some of them being scarcely able to shift the ball out of the mud. Livingstone got the second goal from Smith’s cross; Spiers single-handed, went through for the third, and the fourth following shortly afterwards. There was little interest in the game towards the finish, and players and spectators drenched by the rain, which poured from start to finish were glad when it was all over
