Match Trivia
The ‘Light Blues’ came out of their return League engagement at Douglas Park with unexpected ease, but the margin between the sides exaggerates the measure of their superiority. The Academicals had the best of the exchanges in the first half, but their remodelled front rank failed badly at close quarters, and Garrett was not a success in the centre. The Rangers were not nearly so aggressive, but were much more effective, although Edmonds was badly at fault when Spiers for the first goal. Smith opened quietly but came away brilliantly as time went on, and he had a big say in each of the goals, Spiers had the second and Cunningham the third. There was not a great difference between the respective defences, but in front the winners were a long way ahead. There was not a weakling in the line, and Spiers was most successful in the centre. Stark was the pick of a good middle line, although in the second half Gray was particularly effective. Hendry was the better back, Newbigging kept a good goal. McLean was easily the best of the home forwards, and after his month’s absence revealed form such as he has not shown for some considerable time. Atkinson was energetic, but neither Muir or Garrett were successful. On ground to his liking McFarlane made a splendid impression. Pritchard was fairly useful, although latterly Smith and Cunningham had the whip hand. Little fault could be found with the home backs. Both defended with resolution and all things considered Edmonds was safe at goal.
