The New Year’s Day game between these teams was played on Ibrox Park yesterday before a great crowd. The ground was in splendid order for a game of such importance. The Celts kicked off, and Templeton got his first chance to get away, but he was closely shadowed by Mainds, who relieved the pressure and Rangers took up the running. The play of Smith and Kyle was very brilliant, and as they were judiciously backed up by the halves, the Celts defence was kept very busy. Templeton several times came under the ban of the referee for his unfair treatment of Mainds, and but for this his play would have been of more service. After having all the better of the exchanges, the Rangers were forced back to defend and from a corner well-placed Somers opened the scoring. The Rangers continued to play with great judgment, and after Dickie and Cunningham had failed to find the net with good tries, Smith and Kyle beat down the Celts defence, and Smith sent across a fine centre, which was turned into the net by Dickie. Haltime result – Rangers 1: Celtic 1. The Rangers after a short attack on Celts goal seemed to have had as much of it as they could stand, but they soon recovered, and showed up as well as in the earlier portion of the game, giving the Celts defence as much to do as they could tackle. Several splendid combined runs were initiated by both sides, but for long the defence on both sides with stood all attacks. From a corner kick the Rangers swarmed round Adams, and Kivlichan with a lightning shot beat the Celts custodian. Much temper had been infused into the game, but up till the time when the Rangers led the referee had seem no occasion to deal firmly, but latterly he had to order Quinn off the field. Hendry, who was injured retired at the same time, but was able to resume. To the end, play was always fast and interesting, but there was no further scoring. For the winners all played well, but Stark, Dickie, Smith, Kyle and Mainds stood prominent; while for the losers the best were Orr, McNair, Bennett and Somers. Result – Rangers 2: Celtic 1
