Match Trivia

This tie was played at Celtic Park on Saturday before a surprising large attendance considering the wretched character of the weather. Throughout the first half of the game was largely in favour of the Rangers, who up to a certain point gave a splendid exhibition of good football, and this the ground which was all against accurate footwork. A centre from Rankine was goaled by Spiers and May added a second from a free kick. Subsequently the leader, were too elaborate to be effective, and the Celts breakaway McMenemy scored from Hamilton centre, halftime finding Rangers leading by 2 goals to 1. The second half was more evenly contested, but it was not until the Rangers had put the result beyond doubt that the Celtic put any brains into their play. A breakaway by Smith gave Spiers the third goal; Smith himself followed with the fourth and Kyle thanks to a mistake by Watson got the fifth. From then until the finish it was the turn of the other side, and Somers and McMenemy scored, the final result being – Rangers 5: Celtic 3. It was a very different game to what had been recently seen. Both side, but particularly the Rangers showed delightful movements forward, and the pace despite the quagmire was fast all through. Jackson is an acquisition, Campbell played the best game for months, and May was splendid. Both McLeod and Watson were off colour, but Loney and McNair were always holding their own against a clever forward line. Quinn and McMenemy were the best Celtic forward, without however touching the effective standard of play of the opposing five. Gate and stand £290
