Match Trivia
This important game was decided at Hampden before 25,000 spectators. Celtic kicked off having the advantage of a nasty cross wind, and play settled down near Sinclair until McMenemy shot over. A clever shot from McColl was cleared under the bar, and then Quinn failed with a long drive. Smith and Speedie repeatedly made ground, but their shooting was very weak, and Adams was seldom troubled. Though the Celts found several corners, they were equally weak at goal, and halftime arrived without either side having scored. The Celts opened the second half in surprisingly clever fashion, and McMenemy scored for them after 15 minutes play. Hamilton added a second immediately afterwards, and Robertson put through for Rangers five minutes later. A free kick from Craig almost beat Adams, while McNair sent over after a clever run, in which he beat several opponenets. Gourlay was hurt, and had to retire shortly before the final. A very poor game considering the standing of the teams ended – Celtic 2 goals: Rangers 1 goal. The forward play on both sides was remarkably poor, not one of the 10 doing anything calling for special notice. For the winners Orr, Loney and Hay were very good, and on the losing side Fraser, Stark, May and Gourlay excelled. The amount drawn at gate and stands was £751
