Match Trivia
Perfect weather conditions attended this important League match, which was played on Cathkin Park. The Third introduced one newcomer and the Rangers four. Twenty thousand spectators were present, and after the League championship flag was unfurled by Mrs JB Livingstone, the wife of the president, both teams were heartily greeted, and quickly got into position. The light blues working in from the left with combination that brought to view the splendid and reliable defensive lines of the Third. Raeside, Barr and McIntosh for fully 20 minutes were plied with difficult work, which was correctly dealt with. All the while the Rangers halfbacks, especially May played with much effect, indeed the Third’s front line could make nothing of them. At length McKenzie got possession, and from long range he sent in a very swift shot that quite baffled the backs and custodian, and found a rest in the net. Thereafter the game was associated with interesting play until the interval, when the Third crossed over with a majority of 1 to 0. The second portion of the game opened in favour of the Third, who after many tries scored again, Wilson sending the ball into the net with a ‘cute shot. After this the game became more stubborn than ever, despite the extreme heat. Rangers for a while had a spell, and it fell to Mackie to score the Rangers first goal, which quite baffled Raeside. This proved to be the last goal of the game, though the Third were repeatedly within an ace of augmenting their figures. The Third deserved the full League points, and the Rangers were decidedly fortunate in getting away with a minority of only one goal. Result – Third Lanark 2 goals: Rangers 1. Gate £435 17s 3d, stands £55 9s, total £491 6s 3d. This represents a gathering, including boys’ payment of 20,000.
