Match Trivia
Fine weather favoured the game at Easter Road; Edinburgh yesterday and there would be about 3000 spectators present. The Hibernian had a fairly good team out, but the Rangers only played four of the eleven which did duty for them in the Scottish Cup tie against the Celtic on Saturday last. The Hibernian opened briskly, making considerable ground and causing the Rangers to defend their charge. The Easter Road eleven kept up the pressure, and Callaghan breaking away, scored with five minutes from the start. This early reverse rather surprised the visitors, and playing strongly they rushed to the other end, but the home eleven renewed the attack, and Dickie had again to kick out, whilst almost immediately after he had to fist out a hard shot by Divers. The game after this was a more equal nature, and both custodians were called upon to defend. The home forwards were however much the smarter lot, and when nearing goal were more dangerous. A run by Callaghan and Stewart gave the Hibernian another chance of increasing their score, but Divers failed to get up in time to receive Callaghan’s pass. For a weak eleven the Rangers were not during at all badly as A Smith had several good runs, and with one grand cross shot he all but equalised. Lawrence however saved smartly. The Hibs were still sticking to their work, and several visits were paid to Dickie without result. Ultimately A Breslin caused Dickie to punt out a good shot, Callaghan was being handy and before the Rangers custodian could recover himself, he scored a second point. After this second reverse the play of the Rangers fell off considerably, and their defence was severally tested, but the interval arrived without any further scoring. Halftime – Hibs 2 goals: Rangers 0. On resuming the Hibs again assumed the offensive and Callaghan all but scored from a shot, which just skimmed the crossbar. Play for some time was of an uninteresting nature. The Hibs were again the first to become dangerous Callaghan and Stewart breaking away in fine style, the latter striking the upright with a grand shot. The Rangers after this had several chances, but their slackness in front of goal was most apparent. Subsequent play ruled largely in favour of the Hibernian, and at last Dalrymple made ground on the right, and swinging across to Buchan on the left that player got possession and sent high into goal. Till the close of the game the Hibs had most of the play, but nothing further was scored and the game finished – Hibernian 3 goals: Rangers 0
