Match Trivia

In dry though dull weather these teams met on Ibrox Park before about 20,000 spectators. Losing the toss the Hearts kicked off, but were soon driven back. Walker and Mackie between them carrying play into McWattie’s end, where a couple of fruitless corners fell to the lot of the Rangers. After some defensive work the Hearts showed their true form, but the light blues defenders proved too strong, and again they were driven back, when Hamilton opened the score. This caused the pace to be increased, but try as they liked the visitors could not get on equal terms and crossed over a goal down. On resuming however with the aid of wind the Hearts for a time fairly upset the Rangers, and so closely did they press that Robertson in order to clear passed back to Fraser, who however was not expecting this, and allowed R Walker to rush in and net equaliser. This state of matters was not allowed to remain long, as J Walker who had all along proved a most dangerous opponent to the Hearts defence capped a fine bit of work by beating McWattie from close range. Thereafter Rangers appeared to be able to do almost anything with their opponents, and Hamilton again scored, but offside spoiled the effort. A few seconds later however J Walker again beat McWattie from a cross pass from Smith, Hamilton and Speedie both missing it. Hearts although a couple of goals down did not lie down, but as a result of their plucky play they were enabled to reduce he leeway, Watson kicking the ball against an opponents, and allowing it to rebound into the net. Time arrived a few seconds’ later, leaving Rangers winners of a hard game. Result – Rangers 3: Hearts 2. The gate mounted to £373 12s 6d, while the stands drew £167.
