Match Trivia

In squally weather these teams met on Celtic Park before about 35,000 spectators, the ground was heavy and the wind, which obtained all through, and the hailstorm in the second half helped materially to spoil the game. The hearts won the toss, and wisely elected to play with the wind, which was blowing with great velocity. They early attacked, and the Rangers backs were called upon to get through a vast amount of work, Drummond coming well out of the ordeal. Numerous chances fell to the Hearts to open the scoring, but their shooting was wretched, Dickie having absolutely nothing to do. As time wore on the Rangers took a turn at attacking, and ought to have scored, but Smith failed to reach the ball with an open goal before him. Robertson and Walker collided and the former had to leave the field to be attended to his head being cut. During his absence the Rangers were hard pressed but still they managed to keep the Hearts from scoring. Dalrymple who had been playing well in the open, at last got a decent shot, but luckily for the Rangers Drummond kicked clear, more by accident than intention. He again was the means of saving his side, when all seemed lost. Right on to the end of the first half the Hearts held the upper hand, but failed to get through, thanks manly to the efficient manner in which Stark dealt with Porteous, who could not get his wings set a going. Halftime – A draw, no scoring. With the assistance of the wind the Rangers were immediately on the aggressive and Stark after a corner kick taken by MacDonald scored. Playing like a winning team the Rangers hemmed the Hearts in on their goal, but McWattie was saving so cleverly that it looked as if the scoring was ended. Seldom did the Hearts get past midfield, but when they did it was mainly as a result of Key’s feeding and Walker’s tricky play. A fearful blizzard of wind and hail came on, and the referee stopped the game for five minutes, the players retiring to the pavilion. On taking the field again the Hearts showed improved play, and owing to a rearrangement of their team, Baird going back and Thomson centre forward, their success was no doubt due. Following on a muddle by the Rangers defence, Walker slipped the ball between the posts, and thus drew a game, which looked won for the Rangers previous to this unlooked for success. Right on to finish both teams strove hard for the winning goal but without success. A poor game ended in a draw – 1 goal each. Considering the weather the attendance was most surprising. The drawings amounted to £1450 of which £1300 came from gate money and £150 from stand and enclosure. The tie will be replayed next Saturday at Celtic Park
