Match Trivia
Unlike the majority of other grounds, Ibrox Park was found playable on Saturday, and the Scottish Cup tie which was down for decision between these two clubs was carried through. The pitch during the week had been covered with straw, and previous to the hour of starting this was removed, leaving the ground in good order for the match. A sprinkling of sand prevented the ground from becoming too slippery. The snow which had been falling during the forenoon fortunately cleared off when the teams lined up. The weather, however, was still cold and bleak, and made spectators somewhat uncomfortable. This, to a large extent, accounted for the small attendance. At the outset play was fast and interesting. The Auchterarder men kicking off against a cold and biting wind, and carried the ball in the direction of Dickie. Before they had travelled very far the Rangers’ halves repelled the attack, and the Ibrox front rank got on and made straight for McKinlay. Eadie and his partner succeeded in clearing, but a minute later the home forwards were again in the vicinity of the Auchterarder custodian, and a foul saved the goal from downfall. Down the field the ball was carried by the visitors in smart style, but they did not make much headway ere they were brought up by Crawford and Fraser. Play was again transferred to the other end, where McMurray missed scoring. The visitors now gave the Ibrox eleven something of a fright. Cameron, Laird and H Guthrie got off on the run, and getting the better of Fraser, Cameron passed to Laird, who had he steadied himself and taken time, ought to have score. He did not do so, and the shot went wide. In another moment, through a mistake on the part of Fraser, Duff got the ball close on Dickie, and sending in a strong shot just missed the goal, the ball striking the post and going bye. After this the Rangers made it hot for the Auchterarder team. Hamilton opened the scoring with a shot which McKinlay, had he not fumbled ought to have saved. Shortly after this McDonald added a second goal, and just before half-time Gibson put on a third. The interval arrived with the score – Rangers 3; Auchterarder 0. Without leaving the field the teams crossed over, and the second half commenced. Play was to the fast side, and the Auchterarder lads gave a good account of themselves. The Rangers were, however, bent on securing goals. Speedie, with a capital shot, was the first to score this half, followed a few minutes later by McDonald adding a fifth goal. The visitors after this rallied slightly but they made little headway against their more experienced opponents. Speedie scored a sixth goal, following which the interest of the spectator was roused by a determined effort on the part of Auchterarder forwards to score. They narrowly missed doing so, and on Speedie adding the seventh goal time was called.
