Match Trivia

The first meeting of these clubs under Scottish League auspices took place at Tynecastle, Edinburgh under favourable conditions. The weather though dull at the start brightened up as the afternoon wore on. The attendance would number about 12,000. The Hearts started the game, and Porteous got away on the right but Drummond pulled him up, and then Alex Smith got away on the Rangers left. The internationalist passed to J Walker who got close in, and Allan in tackling the ex-Hearts man tripped him up within the dreaded line, a penalty being awarded. Neil took the kick, and landed the ball in the net, the game being a minute old. After this unexpected reverse the Hearts played up in determined fashion, and the opposing halfbacks had their work cut out, but they were equal to all being asked of them, and the best chance of equalising fell to Williamson, who shot hard at Dickie, but the Rangers custodian safely cleared. After this the defence on both sides were severly tested, but the goalkeepers came out of the fray with clean sheets. The game continued of a fast and interesting nature, and the Hearts at this stage were showing to better purpose, Thomson in particular working hard for the equaliser. At the other end McWattie was nearly caught napping, a shot from Alex Smith just striking the post. Following on the ‘Maroons’ fairly besieged the Rangers citadel and all sorts of shots were sent in to Dickie, who was at times lucky in getting rid of the ball. Nearing the interval the Rangers paid a visit to the other end, but McWattie cleared and halftime arrived with the score – Rangers 1 goal: Heart of Midlothian 0. On restarting the Hearts at once pressed, and Porteous gave Dickie a hot shot to hold. Following this a great tussle ensured in the Rangers goalmouth, where Dickie saved in miraculous fashion from Key while three Hearts forwards were in close attendance. Drummond brought relief, but the Rangers attack was short lived as the Hearts again returned to the attack, and so hard pressed was N Smith that he drew the legs from Williamson within the penalty line. Key too the kick, but much to the disgust of the Tynecastle followers the little ‘un sent the ball wide of the mark. The game quieted down a bit, but the Rangers looked the more dangerous lot, and Hamilton more than once threatened further downfall of the Hearts goal. Buick then let the home forwards away, and Thomson getting the ball past Stark, Walker tackled on, and landed the ball into the corner of the net, thus equalising. This success fairly roused the Hearts to gain the lead, and after the Rangers had has a look in, the Hearts again swarmed round Dickie, but after getting rid of a shot from the right, the Hearts were down on him. The Rangers custodian lay as if stunned, and while in this position one of the Hearts sent the leather into the net, the referee awarding the Hearts a goal. The Rangers protest with the referee as to the validity of the Hearts second goal. Result – Heart of Midlothian 2 goals: Rangers 1 goal. The gate and stand drawings were £300
