Match Trivia

Much to the chagrin of the 400 spectators at Ibrox Park, Robertson did not come out, with the Rangers team as had been expected, the eleven being the same as drew with the Celtic the previous Saturday. Most people imagined that the Rangers would have the easiest of roads to the Thistle goal, but during the opening half this theory was badly exploded. The Thistle defence, especially the backs, showed a most determined front, and one that took a deal of the conceit out of the Rangers forwards. More than once Dickie has to stop dangerous tries by the Meadowside vanguard, and occasionally the Ibrox backs had their hands more than full. Gibson however, was playing one of greatest game for his teams, and nearing the interval he took up a neat pass from Campbell, and with a magnificent drive landed the ball in the net. With only a goal separating the teams at halftime the closing half was anticipated to furnish more exciting play. But, alas the anticipation was ruthlessly denied, for the Rangers speedily got into their best goal-scoring mood and the Thistle defence practically went to the wall. Hamilton was not long in scoring a second goal from a centre by Smith, and the latter shortly afterwards ended a clever individual run by beating Wilkie for the third time. A fourth goal was put on by Campbell, after which the Rangers forwards eased a bit. The Thistle naturally did not care to be toyed with, and eventually they had the satisfactions of beating Dickie, a shot from Connor being too much for him. Nothing more was done by either side in the scoring line. Detailed criticism of the players is unnecessary. It was patent to everybody that the Thistle were overmatched, although their defence in the first half was difficult to penetrate. A Smith while inclined to do too much individually, was perhaps the cleverest forwards on the field, and Hamilton infused much more dash, and determination into his play than he did against the Celtic. The Thistle forwards worked very hard, but lacked cohesion, Walker was the best of the half-backs line, while Campbell and Wilson along with Wilkie made few mistakes, but were unable to cope with the recourse and dash of the Rangers forwards in the closing period. Of the Rangers defence Gibson was the outstanding player, and as a matter of fact his equal for all-round play was not to be seen on the field.
