Match Trivia

With Glasgow to themselves it is not surprising that the attendance at Cathkin was one of the best of the season so far, quite 16,000 spectators being present. Seldom has a meeting of the clubs been productive of a more interesting or spirited contest. The high wind played an important part in the match, the side having the aid of the breeze for the time being monopolising the play. With young Cross at centre the 3rd Lanark forwards moved solidly and combinedly, and after ten minutes the pressure Hugh Wilson with a nice shot from well out, opened the scoring. The next minute the Third again seemed to have the ball over the goal line, but Referee Wylie decreed otherwise, and a sharp run by Alex Smith transferred operations to the other end, where Hamilton very smartly equalised. The Cathkinites a few minutes later again secured the lead, a nicely crossed ball from Johnston resulting in Lynn banging the ball past Dickie with terrific force. With the wind behind them in the closing portion the Rangers got there inning, but the Third defence offered a stubborn resistance, and almost half an hour had gone before Hamilton with a splendid shot from 20 yards range, saved the match for his club. On play the Rangers were slightly the superior team, and with a little luck might have scored another point in the second half. Their shooting however is not what it once was, Speedie and McDougall being especially weak in this respect. The home forwards had several dangerous raids on Dickie in the second half, Johnston and Cross-jun., once or twice being within an ace of scoring. As a combination the Cathkin forwards excelled the Ibrox quintets for the first half hour, but after that their movements became jerky. The substitution of McDougall for Campbell on the Rangers right was not a success, for McDougall was practically a passenger. Wilkie made splendid efforts to atone for his partner’s deficiencies, and played the best game he has yet done for the Rangers. Alex Smith was good as usual, but Speedie and Hamilton have been seen to better advantage. Cross wrought splendidly throughout for his team, his fearless tactics against Smith and Drummond stamping him as a coming centre. Johnston continues to improve and with Cross shared the honours in the front rank. The Anglo-Scots both started well, McConnachie for the first half hour being especially brilliant. At half-back the Rangers had slightly the pull, Stark, Neil and Gibson being a shade in front of Cross-sen., Sloan and Wilson. The latter however was the best of the six. All the backs played splendidly, the two Smiths being the best of the respective pairs. The Rangers representative has not played so well for sometime, his quick recovery work being reminiscent of his best days. Dickie seemed nervous at the start, but improved as the game progressed, while Raeside kept a good goal throughout.
