Match Trivia

The Rangers had a pretty easy task in meeting the Queen’s Park, the latter placing a very indifferent sort of team in the field. All through the ‘Light Blues’ appeared to be masters of the situation, although occasionally the Queen’s broke away in a manner that looked decidedly dangerous. Particularly was this the case in the first half, and twice J McLean missed what should have been certain goals. Not till within ten minutes of the interval did the Rangers succeed in beating McWattie, but it was a well-worked-for goal, and splendidly shot by Campbell. Crossing over with the lead of a goal, the Rangers began the second half in determined style, and eventually Sharp kicked two goals in rapid succession, McWattie having little or no chance of saving. Near the finish the Queen’s scored their only point from a corner kick. The game was very pleasantly contested, the Queen’s, notwithstanding the knowledge that they were overmatched, playing with wonderful freshness and fairness, while the Rangers evidently confident of success, stooped to unfair tactics. The amateurs were very weak forward, with the exception of Cochrane, who initiated numerous effective runs. His play was all the more commendable in view of the fact that Nicol Smith gave glimpses of hid old form, and gave nothing away. McGhee tried hard to balance his wings, but Neil somehow always got in his way. The Rangers forwards, while faster on the ball and stronger in finishing, did not by any means give an ideal display, their falling off being mainly due to Hamilton being off colour, and Speedie’s tame shooting. At halfback the loses were inferior to their opponents, Templeton alone being on a par with any of the Rangers trio, Graham who filled Robertson’s place at left-half, was in brilliant fettle, and for cleverness and resource was not equalled by any player on the field. Smith and Drummond overshadowed Eadie and W Stewart, both tacking and kicking with excellent judgement and power. The goalkeeping on both sides was good, McWattie it may be mentioned was about twenty minutes late in taking up his accustomed position; but by the Rangers permission, Burnett made a capable understudy until his arrival.
