Match Trivia
This important tie was played on Celtic Park on Saturday afternoon. The weather was against a good attendance of spectators, who numbered between 6000 and 7000. The Thistle who were handicapped through the absence of Freebairn and Gibbons, kicked off but were early brought up by Drummond, whose clearing kick was improved upon by the front line. Wilkie was severely tested, and after dealing with a number of difficult shots he was beaten by McPherson. The condition of the field was altogether against the finer points of football, and both teams indulged in the big kicking and rushing style. Although a goal down the Thistle were quicker and more accurate with the ball, but they were always thwarted by Dickie, Smith and Drummond, and the halfbacks. Near halftime Robertson scored a second goal, the result of a misunderstanding between goalkeeper and back, and the interval arrived with the Rangers leading by 2 goals to 0. The Rangers forced the pace in the second half, but most of their shots were diverted, owing to the shadowing tactics of the Thistle’s back lines. After 30 minutes play Hamilton from a difficult position scored with a shot that quite baffled Wilkie, and settled the destination of the cup for another year. Rain fell nearly all the second period of the game. Five minutes from time the Thistle scored their only goal off a corner kick, Campbell sending the ball home. Play was seldom exciting, and a poor gamed ended as follows – Rangers 3 goals: Partick Thistle 1 goal. The drawings were – Gated £170 0s 9d; Stands £20 – Total £190 0s 9d.
