Match Trivia

These teams met on Hampden Park last night in this competition, before about 4000 spectators, the night was fine, but cold and a stiff breeze blew from the east. The Third won the toss, and with a wind early gave evidence of their shooting powers, Gibbons and Gillespie both sending in shots which almost took effect. The Third forwards were playing very well, and Dickie got several shots to deal with. Smith and Hamilton then got off together, and after some play in front of Raeside a foul was given against McCue for pushing. Smith took the kick and for a minute or two it looked as if the Rangers might score, but Barr got the ball away, and play was transferred to midfield, where some tricky forward play was over indulged in by both sides. Although the Third had the wind, it seemed to do but little good, at least so far as the shooting of their forwards was concerned, the ball always going high over the bar, and away to the side of the post. A foul against Hamilton gave the Third another chance, but like all other it was spoiled by their shooting. Gillespie and Speedie combined well and they troubled Robertson considerably, but in the end their energetic efforts proved futile, no one being up to take advantage of their passes. Play opened up a bit, and from a foul against Drummond, the Rangers forwards got off, but Thomson brought them up smartly, and again play was taken down towards Dickie’s, where Cross distinguished himself by some clever dribbling. The wind spoiled many of the Rangers efforts, the ball curling in the air in a most deceptive fashion. However the Light Blues got up to Raeside, but Hamilton hanged too long on the ball, and Cross got it away. The Rangers were back, and Graham sent in a shot, which struck the post and came back into play. Graham got it again and passing to Hamilton, that player beat Raeside with a shot which he had no chance of saving. This was about three minutes from the interval, did the Rangers forwards some good, and their forwards gave Barr and Thomson some trouble, but they managed to keep their goal intact. Just on the call of time McPherson was in and accidentally colliding with McCue, and had to be assisted off the field. The interval arrived with the Rangers leading by 1 goal to 0. A minute after resuming McPherson reappeared and the Rangers were early down on Raeside, who very cleverly saved a stinging shot from A Smith. Rangers were making much more use of the wind than the Third managed to do, and the consequence was that the Third were kept bust defending, Gibson, Hyslop and Hamilton all sending in likely shots. Play weaken down a bit, till Gillespie got away and taking the ball right down, passed to Gibbons, but he in a fine position, put it high over the bar. Rangers then got off, Smith centred the ball, and Thomson nearly put the ball through his own goal. Two corners were awarded the Light Blues, and from both of these the Third goal had a narrow escape. Rangers were now having the best of matters, but nothing resulted from all their efforts, although Hamilton might have scored if he had put a little more effort into his play. Considering the teams engaged, the interest in the game was pretty low neither team being seen to any great advantage. Rangers with the wind got off, and Neil slipping the ball to Hamilton, that player passed to Smith, who took up right up and scored a second goal. Any chances the Thirds got were spoiled either by bad shooting or hanging too long on the ball, and the consequence was that the Rangers got off, and Smith, Hamilton and Hyslop made matters pretty lively for Raeside and his backs. Even play followed for a time till Gibbons brought the ball down, and in some pretty play in front of Dickie. Lambie put the ball past, but the point was disallowed for off-side. There was no further scoring and the game which on the whole was pretty tame ended in favour of the Rangers by 2 goals to 0. The money drawn amounted to £108 and with the £482 drawn at the two games between Queen’s Park and Celtic makes a total of £462. The final will be played on Saturday first on Hampden Park between Rangers and Celtic
