Match Trivia
The first Glasgow League match for the season between these teams was played at Celtic Park, before a large attendance - 17,000 – and in splendid weather. The Celtic were at full cup tie strength, bar Bell, whose place was taken by Gilhooley, while Hamilton and Mitchell through illness, were absent from the Rangers, Miller took Hamilton’s place in the centre, Wilkie partnered Campbell on the right, and Miller (Elgin) substituted Mitchell. Considered the strong sunshine, which prevailed, the game was remarkably fast and well contested, and the spectators were cordially afforded an excellent display. The Celts started in great style, McMahon scored shortly after the start, Followed by Marshall with a terrific shot, Divers and Campbell, and at halftime led by 4 to 0. In the second half the Rangers despite the fact that they had the sunshine in their eyes, played exceedingly well and with considerable dash. They had very bad luck, however and it was nit till near the close that they scored their only goal. The Celts won by 4 goals to 1, and on the afternoon’s play they deserved their victory. The gate money came to £409 while £80 was taken at the stands.
