Match Trivia

A crowd of 8000 strong turned out to witness the game between these rivals on Cathkin Park. Both teams contained substitutes, Thomson playing vice Barr, while Miller and Wilkie turned out in place of Mitchell and J Miller. Notwithstanding the sodden condition of the ground, the opening exchanged were extremely fast and intensely exciting. In the first minute Cross lost a magnificent opening a couple of yards from goal; he shot feebly and Dickie cleared easily. The subsequent play was extremely good on both sides, the Third excelling in attack, while their opponents offered a grand defence. The Third pressed severly and from a nicely judged pass by Gillespie, Beveridge beat Dickie, who had no chance to save. After a spell of interesting play, Hamilton and A Smith, who had repeatedly tried to get the better of the opposing defence, at last got through, and Hamilton scored. Play ruled quiet for a little, the Third having slightly the better of the exchanges. To the end of this half both goals had narrow escapes, good defence alone preventing further disaster. At halftime the game stood at a draw of one each. The second half was but a short time in progress when Gibson and McCue collided, and the Ranger had to be carried off the field. With ten men the Rangers played with renewed energy, and completely hemmed in the Third for fully ten minutes. A Smith had the satisfaction of giving his team the lead with a grand shot. Shortly after the game became more open, and but for Dickie and N Smith the Third might have drawn the match. Hamilton was very lame towards the close, and although playing gamely, was not of much use to his side. Although so seriously handicapped, the Rangers managed, despite the strenuous executions of Cross, Beveridge, Gibbons and Gillespie, to keep their goal intact to the finish. Considering the ground conditions, the game was wonderfully fair, and ended with the better team a goal to the good. Result – Rangers 2 goals: Third Lanark 1.
