Match Trivia

Played at Ibrox before a good attendance. The Rangers having won the toss, elected to play with the aid of the wind and sun. The Queen’s kicked off, and early settled down to clever dribbling and passing. Dickie got a warm shot to save, and immediately thereafter W Stewart shot over the bar. The visitors seemed bent on scoring, and it was hard on McColl to be given offside before he played the ball. After momentary pressure on the Rangers defence, A Smith went off with great dash, but he was beaten by Gillespie, who kicked out. A minute after the throw in Wilson had a good opening, but shot wide. The Rangers were soon at the other end, the ball going past. Oswald, for a veteran, was playing capitally. Hamilton changed places with him, and in a few seconds dashed in on Gillespie and almost brought about the downfall of Anderson’s charge. A fine cross by A Smith was missed by Hamilton, and thus a splendid chance of scoring was lost. The men from Hampden more than held their own, pressing the Rangers severely. Dickie cleverly saved a magnificent shot by McColl, who along with his confreres troubled the home defence seriously. Two corners fell to the Queen’s but no goals. For saving a grand drive by Hamilton, Anderson received a great cheer, which was thoroughly deserved. His save was indeed brilliant. Halftime – no scoring. Hamilton kicked of the second half, and Murray getting on kicked the ball over the Rangers goal line. Shortly after the kick-off A Smith sent in a stringing shot, which just missed. The Rangers tried hard to score, but Anderson was in real International form, and refused to be beaten, even with Hamilton jostling him. A foul in midfield to the Rangers was badly taken. A cute header by McColl was splendidly negotiated by N Smith, whose effort was seconded by a beautiful overhead kick by Gibson. A Smith maintained the advantage obtained by there two pieces of play, and crossing to Hamilton, the latter bundled Anderson and the ball into the net. A few minutes later nothing but Anderson stopped the Rangers scoring, who were in irresistible form, and gained a second point through Low and Hamilton. Another siege around the visitor’s goal was checkmated by Anderson who cleared his lines. So well were the Rangers halves performing that N Smith and Crawford had a fairly east time, little more than free kicks coming their way. Gillespie got injured, but making a quick recovery, the contest was soon renewed. A splendid run by Stewart was frustrated, only at the last moment by N Smith giving a corner, which was fruitless to the Queen’s. The visitors defence towards the close wavered somewhat, clever saving by Anderson alone preventing the Rangers from adding to their total. Result – Rangers 2 goals: Queen’s Park 0.
