Match Trivia

Second Replay. Fully 12,000 spectators attended Cathkin Park to witness the Third Lanark and the Rangers replay their semi-final tie in the Scottish Cup competition. The field was somewhat heavy owing to heavy rain in the forenoon. The Rangers won the toss, and Smith kicked off for the Third Lanark. After some midfield play the Third had the benefit of free kick, which was splendidly taken by Barr, but the ball was ultimately sent past. The opening stages were rather favourable to the Third, but the Rangers soon made progress, and caused the Third’s defence some trouble. Only seven minutes of the game had gone when the Rangers opened the scoring as the result of a fine bit of passing among the forwards. The ball was passed out to Smith, who shot right into goal on the run. Milne came out and cleared, but before he had time to recover McPherson had the ball through, this easy success being received with loud cheers by the Rangers partisans. An exciting scene followed right in front of the Rangers goal the ball being sent in time after time, and Gillespie ultimately shooting past. Simpson was putting in a power of work for the Third, who never relaxed their efforts, and kept the ball travelling at a rare speed. The Third had several advantage conceded to them, but somehow they could not get the ball through. As time progressed the Rangers were undoubtedly having the best of it, their forwards play being very effective, Miller in particular being at his best. Drummond on the one side and Barr on the other were vying with each other in effective play, the one being about as good as the other. The Ranger in particular deserved great praise, for there was really no passing him, and in tackling and kicking his form was beyond reproach. The Third had desperately hard lines on several occasions, and it was tantalising to witness how they missed scoring. At this stage and 35 minutes of the game had gone, they certainly deserved to draw level. Every inch of the ground was keenly contested, and on the whole the one team was about as good as the other. It was a close contest and no mistake the Third almost equalising at the call of halftime when the score was – Rangers 1 goal: Third 0. The Rangers led the attack on the restart, but a foul aided the Third, who were making some progress when Drummond returned the ball. The Rangers were keeping the Third well in hand, and Kerr tried a swift cross shot which was just prevented from going through. The game was fast, and at times exciting, the Third occasionally visiting Dickie, who had to run out of his charge to clear. Drummond was repeatedly cheered for some grand work, bringing up the opposing forwards when it was thought they had a clear field for goal, and returning the ball in splendid style. Gillespie and Beveridge tried hard to change the scene of operations from their own quarters, but against such a defence progress was very difficult indeed. Amidst a terribly exciting scene, the Third from a foul close in sent the ball through, but as it did not touch anybody in its progress the referee disallowed the point. Smith, the Third’s centre was injured in a collision with Drummond, and had to be assisted off the field, which was unfortunate for his tem, who were going strong at the time. To make matters worse, the Rangers were awarded a penalty, from which Gibson scored, the ball glancing off Milne and going through. This practically decided the fate of the Volunteers, as with 2 goals to the bad and 30 minutes of the half gone, the Third’s chances looked hopeless. Smith reappeared and was loudly cheered, but even with his assistance the Third who had made a brave display looked a beaten team. Drummond was mainly responsible for the non-success of the Third’s forwards, Gillespie never seeming to get his measure. Play until the close was very even, and the game ended – Rangers 2 goals: Third Lanark 0 goals.
