Match Trivia

Played at Ibrox Park before 30,000. The Rangers won the toss, the Celtic starting five minutes after the advertised time against a fairly strong breeze. Right off Low got on, and by some tricky work got the better of King and Doyle. Hamilton joined in, and put neatly passed to Smith, who sent in a rare centre, which both McPherson and Low missed, the ball going behind. As a let off Gilhooley was making his way to the other end, when Drummond stopped his course. As was natural with the wind aiding them, the Rangers beset the Celtic goal; McPherson and Low were very much at fault near goal, waiting instead of shooting when opportunities presented themselves, five yards off McArthur sending the ball high over the bar. Then Turnbull failed, but recover himself, sent on to Smith who forced a corner off Welford. Off this Neil sent in a fast one, but lucky for the Celtic, the ball struck Welford in its passage. King gave relief, and the Celtic forwards were travelling well, until Gilhooley centre was nipped up by Neil after some midfield work. The Rangers right wing broke away, and some infringement taking place within the 12-yard line, the referee granted a penalty kick, off which Neil scored the first goal for the Rangers. A breakaway by the Celtic forwards at length brought the equaliser, Henderson catching a centre from Gilhooley and heading the ball through. Halftime was called shortly after with the teams level – one goal each. The Rangers were first dangerous after the interval, the forwards passing well and taking the ball right through, but McPherson’s shot was just wide of the mark. The Celtic lost no time in getting to the other end, where a neat bit of play on Campbell part enabled his partner to send in a shot, which struck the post and rebounded. Singular to say, the next raid of the Celts ended in the same manor, Gilhooley shooting across and hitting the post, Dickie clean missing the ball. The Celtic right-winger was easily the most dangerous forward on the field. And had the other forwards made more use of the opportunities afforded them the Celts would have been leading. Welford was playing in rare style at back, and Crawford on the other side was working in a fashion which likewise, the absence of Smith hardly apparent. The heavy ground and fast nature of the play in the first portion had affect on both teams, and in consequence proceedings were to the dull side. Towards the finish Allan broke away, Gilhooley rushing in, and the right winger’s shot was a very near thing, the ball just skimming the cross bar. A similar chance came the Rangers way, Hamilton getting away and passing to Turnbull, who with an open goal, shot widely over the bar, the score at the finish being a draw – one goal each.
