Match Trivia
The rumours prevalent for some time past of captures made by both Celtic and Rangers doubtless was the means of drawing the great portion of the crowd that attended Celtic Park. There would be fully 20,000 present at the start, and no other reason than that of seeing new players could be brought forward for the result of the previous matches, and the seasons form all pointed one way. As well be seen from the teams, the Rangers relied on their season’s eleven, while the Celtic introduced four new men. The Celtic lost the toss, Miller kicking off against a strong breeze. Low was given a past. A foul against Miller gave Gilhooley an opening, Dickie clearing brilliantly, and then Orr was brought under the referee’s notice for fouling McPherson. He would have had a goal, as he tricked Doyle beautifully. From a good run and centre by Henderson, Allan gave a sample of his shooting powers, the ball going low and fast, but just missing. Orr at left half was playing a grand game for the Celts, his heading being particularly fine. Allan was not making much headway, but he was well watched by Glen. The Rangers custodian was kept in employment for a time, and he had to look smart in clearing a shot from Gilhooley. It was the Rangers turn now; Miller showing his forwards the way. He parted the proper moment to Smith, who ran in and shot. The ball bounded out of McArthur’s hands and fell at the foot of Low, but McArthur saved again from the right-winger in grand fashion. Doyle was a bit too clever for Miller and Low, and intercepting a pass from the centre forward, he let his forward’s way to the other end. A long run by Miller followed, which took play to McArthur’s end, where some misunderstanding between the custodian and Doyle almost resulted in a goal for the Rangers. Halftime was called, with Low tricking Doyle and going full sail at McArthur, neither team having scored. The Celts were off with a rare bang after the interval, and after some clever work by Orr at left half, Blessington put across a rare centre, which Henderson did his best to convert but failed. Miller however succeeded and the Rangers were one up. A neat header by Hyslop was pretty turned out by Doyle, and a subsequent attempt by the Rangers to bring off an unexpected shot did not come off. Any good forward work shown in the game came from the Rangers, the Celtic five never getting settled down. Blessington fairly beat Drummond, and parted to Gilhooley, who shot across, Henderson rushing in and beating Doyle. McArthur fisted out a beauty from Hyslop, and then tow fouls against the Celts kept the Parkhead boys busy. Doyle caught one fine centre on his head, and then had a try with his foot, and all danger was over. Orr at back was conspicuous for a fine piece of tackling, in which he fairly beat Miller and Hyslop. The number of accidental fouls was alarming, and for a time the referee’s whistle was too often heard to allow of play settling down. McPherson was the means of allowing Miller to get clean through, and he looked like scoring, but Doyle got up in time to keep him off while McArthur cleared. Time was shortly afterwards called, the score being – Celtic 1 goal: Rangers 1 goal.
