Match Trivia
The attendance at this interesting League match at Logie Green on Saturday was considerably affected by the wretched state of the weather. The Rangers arrived minus D Mitchell, one of the halfbacks, and this necessitated McPherson going into his place and a rearrangement of the front line, Turnbull being included, and Hyslop going over to the left. The opening play was fast. A goal to the Rangers scored in the first few minutes by Miller, rather put a damper on the aspirations of the Saints. D Paton took up a pass of Fisher’s and with a splendid shot laced the teams upon an equal footing. For a long time after this play hug on the balance, the Saints being indefatigable, and the Rangers evidently conscious of their ability to win without making too much of a show. On one occasion Miller was offered a splendid opportunity to increase the Rangers lead. He escaped the vigilance of McLean and Wood, and made a bee-line for the St Bernards goal. When within reasonable shooting distance - only a matter of a few yards – he let drive at Russell, but with an adroitness that was great appreciated by the onlookers the goalkeeper stooped down and stopped the shot with his knees, and then scooped the ball away in the nick of time. The St Bernards had not such good fortune, a little later however, for off a free kick Hyslop easily headed a second goal, and the teams crossed over with the visitors leading by 2 to 1. The second half opened in terrible weather. The backs on either side proved the masters of the forwards, and the onlookers quite reconciled themselves to a result in favour of the Rangers. The Saints, however made a successful rally, and Provan placed the side again equal. Ten came the struggle for the final leading point. The crowd urged the St Bernards on with much enthusiasm, though in a perfectly fair manner, and at length from a corner kick the ball was hustled past Dickie, and a third goal credited to the St Bernards. The team had barely lined up when Mr Marshall blew his whistle and ended a remarkable game. Result – St Bernards 3 goals: Rangers 2 goals.
