Match Trivia

There was but little doubt as to which club would emerge the winner from the tie at Ibrox whatever diversity of opinion might have existed as to the goal margin. Turnbull played centre vice Oswald, who met with a slight accident at his work during the week. In the Linthouse team, Steele (who is meantime in London) was substituted at centre half by Downie of the 3rd Lanark A team, but Barker was a spectator. In the first half the Rangers did nearly all the pressing, the play for about three-fourths of this period being within 40 yards of the Linthouse goal. Smith and Drummond were on their best behaviour, so that about the only ball Dickie had to negotiate was a pass by Nick Smith. This being the case it speaks volumes for the visitors’ defence that the ‘Light Blues’ only netted the ball once in the first 45 minutes. Indifferent shooting on the part of the Rangers quintette had a good deal to do with this however. They all played well in the open, but their finishing was much lacking in accuracy and precision. The goal the Rangers did get was taken by Turnbull from a timely pass by A Smith. In the second half the home team opened strongly, but Linthouse rendered stout-hearted by their comparatively successful resistance in the first half, continued to defend in lucky fashion. Todd gave a brilliant exhibition in goal, and it was within 20 minutes from time ere the Rangers again got the ball between the posts, A Smith pouncing upon Todd before he had time to get rid of a stinger from Turnbull. The Rangers forwards seemed to hold their opponenets too lightly. A few minutes from time a miskick by Mathieson gave the Rangers centre an opportunity to notch number three. Result :- Rangers 3; Linthouse 0. Dickie had a quiet afternoon. Drummond in the first half kicked powerfully and tackled well; in the second half he fell off a bit. Smith did well throughout, being particularly clever at turning the ball up the field while on the run. Gibson was perhaps the best of the halves, who were all good. Each member of the Linthouse team played a dour determined game, and with perhaps the exception of Todd in goal (who was in great form) no one stood out prominently above his fellows, and from the way they lasted out the game the players gave evidence of having been well trained.
