Match Trivia

Played at Cathkin Park before a very large attendance, 16,000 persons being present. The Rangers having lost the toss kicked off against a slight wind. From the outset the pace was fast, the teams going at it with the impetuosity of men eager for the game. The Rangers forwards, by pretty passing, got well down the field, but Barbour intercepted and sent them back to defend their charge. The Third set themselves to open the scoring and three stinging shot were sent in to Dickie, who was exceedingly lucky in one instance in clearing. The game was full of excitement, the ball travelling from end to end of the field in quick succession. The Third were certainly having the better of the exchanges, their halves being too watchful to allow of any elaborate manoeuvring on the part of their opponents’ forwards. After a study defence by the Rangers, Crawford from a judicious pass by Miller romped off and wound up with a terrific show, which struck the upright and bounded past. A moment later a foul against the home lot 40 yards put was beautifully placed by Gibson, and the first point of the match was scored by Gibson, and the first point of the match was scored for the Rangers. The pace did not slacken, and added by the wind, the Third kept up a constant siege on Dickie’s charge. At length after several fruitless though praiseworthy tries, Dunlop from a clever centre by Steel headed through the equaliser. The Third took up the aggressive once more, and Dickie had a lively time, a couple of corners against the Rangers nearly bringing further disaster. At length the real merits of the Rangers quintet were shown to some purpose, a run the length of the field being participated in by the whole front rank, Miller winding up with a perfect beauty, which McFarlane saved well. A regular siege was brought to bear on McFarlane’s charge, ad shot after shot was poured in on the Third goal, but the Rangers experienced the worst of luck, not an opening found. At halftime the score was – Third Lanark 1 goal: Rangers 1 goal. The second half was started with a bit of a surprise, Beveridge getting off by himself on the right, and sending in a stunning shot, which Dickie just managed to reach in time. The Rangers were having what advantage the wind offered, but they were not so steady when opportunities came their way, their shooting being very wide of the mark. Time and again an open goal was before them, but they tantalisingly shot past the post. The Third were not by any means done with, and several times they broke away, but Drummond was on the alert, and averted disaster at the critical moments. After a prolonged interval of defensive work the Third had a splendid chance to break away but Steel was given offside. The game went on in merry fashion – capital play in the open, but miserable shooting when opportunities resented themselves. Here the Rangers once more carried all but McFarlane’s vigilance before them. A grand game ended in a draw – one goal each.
