Match Trivia

Glasgow Charity Cup tie on Hampden Park, in warm weather and before 20,000 spectators. The Rangers won the toss and chose to play with the wind, a strong sun being in their faces. Martin kicked off was not allowed to travel far, and the Rangers left wing getting possession of the ball, and making good progress. Doyle pulled them up and miss kick by Drummond further assisted the Celts, smith covering his partner’s mistake. Hyslop was seen to advantage with some nice dribbling, the effect failing short for want of support. Kelly relieved a hot pressure on his lines, and shortly after the centre half was again to the force, with a neat pass to Ferguson. McMahon joined in, and the pair easily got the better of Smith, Ferguson finishing with a shot, which completely baffled Yuille. The Rangers front rank seemed ill suited to one another, and could not settle down at all, the whole five moving in very disjoined fashion. The Celtic backs were playing in great fashion, seldom making a mistake. The forwards broke away with a sudden rush, and with Ferguson beating Smith all the way, the back had to grant a corner. This was well placed, and Madden very easily put the Celts two up. It was a well wrought-for goal, but after having had a lot of play the Rangers are to be sympathised with their ill luck. McMahon put on a third from a well-placed ball by Doyle, and at halftime the Celts led by 3 goals to nil. The second half had hardly been two minutes started ere Martin got a fourth for the Celtic, the result of some sine work by McMahon. Aided by some feeble play of the part of Yuille, Battles got a fifth, and a well placed foul allowed Martin to head another. Although playing well, the Rangers forwards could not score until five minutes from time, McPherson at length beating McArthur, the score at the finish being – Celtic 6 goals: Rangers 1 goal.
