Played at Ibrox Park before a poor attendance. Rangers having loss the toss, kicked off against a slight wind, McCreadie and Stewart opening play on the right with a close passing run, but Miller quickly checked their inroads, and a dash was made for Bell’s charge, where the study custodian gave Gracie a taste of his weight. McPherson at back was kept busy by Bell and Gracie, who were the best pair on the field to settle to each other’s play, but they could make little headway. The Rangers front rank did not take long to get into their stride, and several splendid chances came Oswald’s way, but he invariably hung too long to the ball, and was dispossessed. A grand rush by Sanderson and Wood transferred the play to the other end of the field, where McPherson, in clearing his lines, conceded a corner, which being well placed was headed through just out of Bell’s reach. The visitors from this point went into the game more confidently and with increased vigour, and for a little it looked as if they had the play in hand. Nothing daunted the ground forwards pegged away, and from a tricky run by McCreadie and Stewart the ball was carried down to the 12 yards line, where the pass was given to Oswald who slipped the ball into the net, Docherty being unable to turn in time to reach it. Halftime arrived with the score – Rangers 1: Dumbarton 1. Dumbarton resumed with ten men, but the play did not suffer to any extent, and they made a firm stand against their speedy opponents. After a lot of tantalising play in front of Docherty, McCreadie found an opening and the Rangers were in the lead. This seemed to turn the tide of their play, and for a time Docherty’s charge was fairly besieged, but he treated every kind of shot in the coolest and most summary style. For full ten minutes the siege was maintained, and in the melee, when close pressed Miller in endeavouring to head out put the ball through his own goal. A foul about 20 yards out was taken by Mitchell, and Oswald with one of his tricky kicks overhead almost beat Docherty. In fact but for Docherty’s grand display between the posts the Dumbarton must have suffered an ignominious defeat, as shot after shot was rained in on him from all quarters. Result – Rangers 3 goals: Dumbarton 1 goal.
