Match Trivia
After several attempts this League match was decided at Ibrox Park, Govan. The ground was still very hard. Fully 4000 spectators were present. Ten minutes later the Rangers kicked off. Play was confined to midfield till the Third made way, and Haddow had to kick out a shot from L Bell. A free kick against the Third brought relief, and McPherson tried a run. His pass was caught by Simpson, and again the Rangers had to act on the defensive. Play was slow, the players evidently being bent on taking care of themselves. Marshall conceded a corner, but Smith got it away. The ball was returned however, and L Bell rather easily scored the first goal of the match for the Third. The Rangers had a look in after this, but the Third’s defence was able for the opposing forwards. McPherson and A Smith each gave Orr a shot, but neither had the desired effect. Halftime result – Third Lanark 1 goal: Rangers 0. Without losing any time, the game was resumed. Right off McPherson got in a fine shot, which sailed across the goalmouth. No one was up to take the ass, and the chance was lost. For a time the Rangers pressed severly. But the Third Lanark were very strong in their defence. A free kick brought relief, but not for long, as the Rangers soon returned to the attack. All they could get were corners, and from them they could not score. McCreadie had a rare chance to equalise, but Bowman spoiled his effort. The Rangers besieged their opponenets goal continually almost but the Third played on the defensive. Final result – Third Lanark 1 goal: Rangers 0.
