Match Trivia
Played at Ibrox Park, the ground of the Rangers, before 12,000 spectators. Punctually to time Michael kicked off for the Hearts, and a rush was at once made for goal, but Drummond brought them up, and play was kept about midfield. The Hearts as usual tried to rush the pace, and the Rangers defence wavered for a bit, Drummond, Smith and Marshall missing their kicks in succession. Scott and Walker with tricky passing got well down field, but the former sent behind. The ground team was slow to get into its stride, but a breakaway by Barker and McPherson gave a different aspect to the game, and a corner was forced. This was badly taken, and the Hearts got off again with a bustling run, but Scott was penalised. A minute later the last named player gave a grand exhibition of tackling beating Scott in clever fashion. The Hearts however were not to be denied. They rushed along at a rattling pace, and ten minutes from the start Hogg with a swift, low shot from 30 yards out banged on the first point of the game, Haddow falling on the slippery ground to stop the ball, which bounded over him, as he lay on the ground. The Hearts were undoubtedly playing better to each other than their opponenets, who seemed somehow to be too anxious to go off on their own account. Gibson was the only man in defence who kept himself cool, and his tackling and placing were admirable. McPherson and Barker worked well to each other, but near goal they were invariably upset by Battles, who was full of running. A dangerous rush by the Hearts was brought to a close by a foul against Scott for offside. From the free kick which followed Cowan and McCreadie raised the hopes of their followers by a very clever run. Cowan centred just on the line, but Gray sent if over the bar. A careless bit of play by Drummond in midfield let away Walker who getting within shooting range, let drive with a high sailing shot, which Haddow failed to reach. This further success spurred on the Hearts, and till the close of this half they held the upper hand, but no further scoring took place. Halftime result – Hearts 2 goals: Rangers 0. Rangers opened briskly in the second half, but the ball went behind. A foul in midfield was taken by Smith, who sent the ball behind. A minute later Michael with one of his headstrong rushes got pass Smith and Drummond very cleverly, but his parting effort was wide of the mark. After playing in a straggling fashion for about fifteen minutes. Gibson sent in a pretty shot, and Cowan lying handy headed it through. This success put new life into the ground team, and playing with more method, they looked like equalising, the excitement now growing intense. A foul against the Rangers 20 yards out gave the home supports some anxiety, but after dallying about the goalmouth for some time, Drummond got it away, and play was transferred to the other end, where there was a lot of wild kicking indulged in. The slight wind, which blew down the field, was favouring the visitors, and they had the better of their opponents, but the Rangers responding to the cries of the followers, livened u a bit, and McPherson and Barker had several good tries for goal. As time drew near it was evident that the Rangers would require to change their tactics if they meant to avoid defeat, and for several minutes they played a really clever, close passing game that completely baffled the opposing defence, but they could not find an opening. In the last four minutes of the game the play was very disappointing, the finer points of the game being very rarely seen, and the rougher element entered into the play. Result – Hearts 2 goals: Rangers 1 goal
