Match Trivia
The second visit of the Rangers this season to the East was to the ground of the Leith Athletic at Beechwood Park. At the time of start there was a good attendance. The Athletic started the game, and before long the Rangers got down. Barker secured an easy goal. The Rangers kept up the pressure, but lay was loose. MacFarlane gave relief, but the ball was well taken, and Kay had several times to save. The Athletic got off. The Rangers however kept the ball well on the run, and again they got down with an open goal. Barker for the second time took the chance and smartly kicked the second goal. The game was open, and for some time the Athletic gave considerable trouble, but the Rangers back division cleared, and then Kay put in some saving work. The Rangers however kept pegging in, and twice the ball was sent over the bar. Leith again got away, but Cowan neatly got the ball, and aided by a foul it was again back at the other end, where the ball was sent over the bar. Cowan and McCreadie than had a warm time, but their efforts were nullified by the back play of the Athletic. The latter than made a strong endeavour, but met with such opposition that the ball was taken to the other end, where a corner was the result, and for a time they had a decent look in. Just after this a foul against the Athletic resulted in Mitchell putting on third goal. The Athletic made a desperate attack on the Rangers goal, but it was left intact, and the forward ranks clearing, Cowan and McCreadie got well into Athletic ground, where Cowan got a fourth goal. At length the efforts of the Athletic were rewarded Paterson took the ball from Marshall, and with a fine shot he scored the first goal the Athletic. Halftime result – Rangers 4 goals: Athletic 1. In the early stages of the second half the Athletic warmed to their ply, and for a considerable time kept the Rangers hemmed. The game became more open, and once the Rangers were dangerous, but the Athletic got back and made a dangerous attack on the Rangers goal, but it came to nothing. They still kept pegging away, and Gillespie was able to get a second goal. The Athletic now made up for lost time, and the Rangers had to put in a strong defence, which was however broken through by Gillespie, who with a strong shot got a third goal for the Athletic. For a very ling time the teams strove hard, but as a rule play was rather in favour of the Athletic. Latterly the Rangers tried very hard to increase their score. The final result was – Rangers 4 goals: Athletic 3 goals.
