Match Trivia
At Logie Green Edinburgh, the weather was splendid, and there was a large attendance. Boyd started the game for the Rangers, and Brady soon got the ball, but the Rangers left relieved, and a goal kick at the St Bernards’ end resulted. The Rangers kept well in, and Sneddon had to fist out, the ball being taken to the other end, where play was very fast. Much excitement was shown when the Saints sent in some hot shots, which were well taken. Play followed at midfield, the Saints holding their own. After a rush up a foul was given against them. The game still continued on fast lines, and mainly on Rangers territory. After about ten minutes play one of the Saints forwards made a capital attack, which was thwarted, and on the fist out Paton scored the first goal. The Saints kept playing a determined game, and again the ball was sent by. The Rangers at length got a chance, and McPherson securing the opportunity equalised. The Saints got away, and were unfortunate in not scoring, the Rangers goal being open the ball in the excitement of the moment went lightly over the bar. A rush by the Rangers was received with anxiety, but the ball went by. A slip by Baird gave Boys and Barker a chance, which they readily availed themselves of, Barker sending in a ball which easily best Sneddon. The Saints then had a good look in, but the Rangers had no great difficulty in clearing, and again the home defence was looked to. They were however, sure on the ball, and before long Haddow had some trouble. A couple of fouls again the Rangers looked rosy for the Saints, but their efforts were nil. They made attack after attack, but without result, and the Rangers forwards broke away, Boyd nearly scoring the ball just missing the post. On resuming the Rangers got well into the Saints ground, but the latter cleared, and then an attack was made on the Rangers posts, but Haddow was on the alert. A couple of fouls in front of the Saints goal looked dangerous, but they got the ball away. Murdoch did good service, and aided by Oswald, Haddow had to fist out. Cowan and Boyd then had a grand run, and McPherson finished by sending in the ball, scoring a third goal for the Rangers. The game was now practically one of defence on the part of the Rangers, but at length there was a breakaway, only for a moment, however as the Saints gradually got down, and then long shooting was prevalent. McPherson with a nice pass to Barker enabled the latter to put in a neat shot, scoring a fourth for the Rangers. Immediately afterwards Sneddon was fortunate in stopping a dangerous shot, the ball bounding over the bar. The Rangers started well in the second half, a strong attack being made on the home goal. This did not last long, and Haddow was kept busy, Oswald just missing a fine pass. The Rangers got well away, and after hard work a third goal was secured. Shortly afterwards the Rangers forwards had a nice run, and McPherson nearly scored. Play was very open, each end in turn being visited. The Rangers unfortunately were declined to be rough, but Mr Marshall kept a strict watch, and gave several fouls against them. The St Bernards had to do a lot of defensive work, and at length Barker secured a fourth goal for the Rangers. Towards the finish the game fell off a bit, and lacked interest. There was no further scoring the game ending – Rangers 4 goals: St Bernards 1 goal.
