Match Trivia
The return fixture between these clubs was played at Ibrox Park, Govan. Before fully 4000 spectators, the Hearts having lost the toss, kicked off. They at once made tracks for Haddow, but Drummond interrupted and returned the ball. The Rangers left wing got possession, but they had not gone far when G Hogg took the ball from McPherson. A corner for the Hearts followed, but Mitchell cleared. After some centre play Gray initiated a run for the Rangers. He passed well in front, and Barker tried a shot, but the ball struck Adams and went behind. The corner kick was placed behind. Neither goalkeeper was getting much to do. Haddow saved a fine shot from McLaren, and then Smith put one from Russell over the line. Nothing came of the corner. A free kick against the Hearts gave the Rangers a chance, but the ball was headed past. A minute later Russell might have scored from a pass by Taylor, but he was offside. The Rangers put on a spurt, and really they had hard lines in not getting the ball past Cox. At halftime no goals were scored. On resuming the Hearts were first to show up, and within a minute they obtained a corner, Smith clearing with a fine header. The Hearts hovered round the Rangers goal, but Haddow was not to be beaten. McPherson opened up the game, and Boyd nearly scored, but his shot went right across the goalmouth. The Hearts put on the pressure, and a fine piece of play by Adams then Begbie was capped by Taylor scoring the first goal of the match for the Edinburgh team. The Rangers came away with a rush after this reverse, Barker and McPherson being prominent. They could not get on the equalising point try as they would. McPherson tried a long shot, but it missed the mark. The Rangers were playing a disjointed game and the Hearts halves never gave them time to settle down. The Rangers strove hard to improve their position, but they were playing the wrong game to score. The Hearts by different tactics again got down on Haddow, and after the custodian had saved a shot from Chambers, Michael scored a second goal rather easily. The game was now pretty much of a scramble. The ball was kept pretty much in Rangers territory. Towards the close the ‘Light Blues’ broke away, but their chances of winning were gone. A fine pass by Barker gave Boyd a chance, which he took advantage of, and with his head he scored their only goal. Result – Heart of Midlothian 2 goals: Rangers 1 goal.
