Match Trivia

Played on the ground of the Rangers before 15,000 spectators. The ground was in fairly good condition. Losing the toss, the Rangers kicked off against the wind and with strong sunshine in their eyes. Gray tipped the ball to McPherson, who in turn gave it to Barker, but Gulliland intercepted it, and Gillespie had a shot. The ball went past. The goal kick was beautifully returned by Freeland, but a foul against Drummond stopped play. The free kick was taken by Robertson, who landed the ball in the net, but as no one touched it in its passage the point did not count. A brace of corners for the Queen’s followed, but both were fruitless. A fine piece of back lay by Smith enabled Barker and McPherson to transfer operations to the other end, where Baird nearly gave away a goal. Sillars relieved. A foul against the Queen’s was also got away by Sillars. Again Haddow had to save a scorcher from Lambie. This was followed by one from Berry, which went over the bar. A combined run by the Rangers front rank raised the hopes of their supporters, but Freeland this time spoiled their chance. Thus early the game was most exciting. Waddell nearly scored, but Haddow saved grandly at the expense of a corner. A foul against Robertson brought relief, and Boyd, Gray and McPherson once more made tracks for Baird. A fine run by Gulliland and Waddell was the next feature of the game. Mitchell and Drummond were on the alert, however and the Queen’s men were forced to part with the ball. A corner for the Queen’s was splendidly saved by Haddow, and then a combined run transferred play again to Baird’s end. Here Boyd should have scored, but Freeland managed to get the ball way. For a time lay was confined to midfield. Gradually the Queen’s drew ahead, and a shot by Hamilton was only saved by Haddow at the expense of another corner. The ball was ultimately sent behind. Play now raged in the Rangers quarter, and a clinking shot from Waddell took effect. First goal for the Queen’s. The Rangers got away with the midfield kick, and for a time they looked as if they would equalise. Baird was not to be beaten, however and again Haddow had to save a hard shot from Berry. With the ball in midfield the whistle sounded. Halftime result – Queen’s Park 1: Rangers 0. After the usual interval the game resumed, the Rangers having the wind in their favour. Right off the Rangers had a corner, which McPherson took. He laced well and A McCreadie headed to Boyd, who in turn headed it into the net, thus equalising. This was followed by a run by Gulliland, which ended in McCreadie giving a corner away. Nothing came of it. The game now opened up a bit, each goal being assailed in turn. The Rangers certainly had the best of it, but they were met by a sturdy defence. A long shot by McPherson nearly took effect, the ball missing the goal by a foot. The Queen’s were playing a hard game. Berry leading the way repeatedly. The Queen’s were playing beater, and as the wind had died away, the game was more even. A fine shot from Boyd again missed by inches, Freeland was holding Steel well in check. The Rangers pressed severly, their forwards shooting every chance they got. How Baird kept some of the shot out was a mystery. With ten minutes to go the Rangers redoubled their effort to score, while the Queen’s defence seemed to get steadier. Three minutes before the close the Rangers had a fine chance to score from a free kick, but McCreadie shot rashly, and the ball went far over the bar. Each team strove hard to put on the winning point, but it was not to be, and the result was a draw, one goal each.
