Match Trivia
The return fixture between these clubs was played at Dumbarton on soft ground; there was a fair attendance. Dumbarton monopolised the opening passages and were soon threatening the Rangers goal. Muir cleverly stopped a shot from the right and R Drummond passed on to McPherson and Barker, who called upon McLeod to defend his charge. Some neat work was shown by the Dumbarton forwards and Taylor with a delightful chance shot over the bar. Corners to both teams brought no result, but the Dumbarton goal was nearly captured by a splendid shot from McPherson. McLeod smartly got rid of the ball, but H McCreadie and Boyd soon had passions and only smart defence on the part of Smith kept them out. Ferrier and Taylor both had shots at Muir and then a fine pass by the latter was nullified by Johnston failing to be up in time. The two Drummonds were showing grand defence and the Linthouse man was quite up to the Rangers form. Sanderson checked a run by Boyd, and Taylor and Ferrier raced away on the right, the latter shot just skimming the crossbar. The home men were having the best of their opponents, but could gain no advantage. Gray broke away in the centre and shot hard, but McLeod tipped the ball aside. Being hemmed in front of their own goal looked ominous for Dumbarton. McPherson took the final shot, which was yards too high. At halftime no goals had been scored. The Rangers resumed in business-like fashion, and in a twinkling Boyd had beaten McLeod, but the point was disallowed on the account of offside. Johnston soon scored with a fine shot. The home team were playing a much-improved game and only had finishing to their part saved the Glasgow men’s goal. McPherson opened out the play by a good run, but Miller beat him, and from a series of passes Johnston rushed in and bustled the goalkeeper, and the ball passed into the net. Load cheering greeted this success, but the referee disallowed the point. Muir saved a fine try by Ferrier, while Johnston struck the upright. Boyd dashed off for the goal kick, and shot straight, but McLeod saved, and in a minute Bell and Taylor were the opposing defence, the former’s shot skimming the bar. Boyd was the Rangers most prominent forward, and the only man who gave McLeod any anxiety. McCreadie had also a chance, but he shot high. Roused by the shouts of their supporters, Dumbarton forced the Rangers back on their own lines, and Sanderson from well out completely baffled Muir with a grand shot. Realising their position, the Rangers tried to force the pace, but McLeod cleverly cleared out of a dangerous scrimmage. There was no further scoring, and the game ended – Dumbarton 2: Rangers 0
