Match Trivia
The return League fixture between those teams took place at Ibrox Park, Govan. The weather was ideal for football, but the field was rather spongy after the heavy rains of yesterday. When the game started there would be 3000 spectators present. Five minutes late the Rangers kicked off against a light breeze, and with the sun in their eyes having tipped the ball to Steel, who got round Mann, and passed to the left wing. McPherson assayed a shot from the corner, but the ball went pass. Bruce shot, and Ross might have scored, but he was too late, and the ball went over the lines. From a goal kick the Rangers left wing made tracks for the other end, but a foul against Boyd brought them up. The free kick came to nothing. A bout between Walker and Mitchell ended in the Rangers conceding a corner. Nothing came of it, however. The Rangers were next in evidence, and they also got a corner, but the same result. Play was very open, each goal being visited in turn. Baxter had an open goal, but he shot high over the bar. A minute later Wilson, from centre half, sent in a beauty which struck the crossbar, and rebounded into play. The Athletics had very hard lines at this stage. From a free kick they had a shot which struck the inside of the upright and came out again, Andy McCreadie cleared, but the Athletics returned to the attack. A run by Steel and McCreadie opened up the play once more. Steel put in one to Sneddon, but the goalkeeper had little difficulty in clearing. A minute later he was deservedly cheered for a magnificent save of a shot by McPherson. Each goal was again visited ere the whistle sounded. The Rangers had another corner to take, but time was up ere they had the ball placed. Halftime result – No goals. Without losing much time the game was resumed. After a run by Bruce on the right for the Athletics the Rangers got away, and a miss kick by Anderson gave Boyd a chance. Sneddon saved, but McPherson who was lying handy, breasted the ball through, thus registering the first goal for the Rangers. Play was very fast after this. The Athletics strove hard to improve their score. Several corners fell to the Rangers, but the Leith defence kept them all out. Baxter hard a try, his effort was well meant, but it went over the bar. About ten minutes before the close the Athletics had a free kick, 20 yards from out Wilson placed the ball in the net, but as no one touched it in its passage through nothing came of it. The Rangers retaliated, and had a brace of corners. Both were placed behind. Play was most exciting till the close. Final result – Rangers 1 goal: Leith Athletic 0.
