Match Trivia
These clubs met at Edinburgh on Saturday for the first time this season in the League competition. Though the weather was unpromising, rain kept off during the match, which was witnessed by over 8000 people. The Rangers kicked off some twenty-five minutes late. Begbie returned and passed to Walker, who headed the ball through a midst great enthusiasm. The Hearts continued the pressure until relief was had by a foul against Begbie, and the Rangers, recovered from the initial surprise goal, put on strong pressure. Fairbairn had difficulty in getting away a strong shot from Gray. The Hearts replied vigorously and forced Haddow to throw out. Some loose play, principally in the visitors ground then took place. Russell centred, Drummond missed his kick, and Chambers, who was running down, caught the ball neatly and banged it through amidst renewed cheering. Shortly after resuming Taylor got away again and centred smartly. Russell accepted the ass, but missed an apparently easy thing, and the ball was ultimately sent behind. Barker suffered in a collision with Begbie, and was forced to retire. A period of pretty play, principally in midfield, in which both sides appeared very equal, occupied a restful attention. Chambers had one opportunity, but his foot missed the ball, which was easily got away. The next moment however the same layer sent in a powerful shot to Haddow, which the custodian brilliantly held. A tussle between Taylor and Mitchell ended in favour of the Hearts man, but Chambers sent the ball past. Immediately after Chambers shied a shot. The Rangers then settled a little, and a pretty piece of assign was witnessed. Hogg intervened, but ultimately Blyth beat Fairbairn. Seven minutes after Gray equalised. The Hearts right then made a strong effort, but Drummond easily beat Taylor and sent the ball well down. When halftime was called the ball was travelling in midfield. Halftime result – Hearts 2 goals: Rangers 2. The second period opened with visits to either end, the Hearts attacking rigorously and meeting with a stern defence, Drummond performance drawing most attention. Ultimately Russell accepted a centre from the right and scored. The home team returned repeatedly to attack at close quarters, and after a chance had been lost by Chambers, Russell got possession. His shot was greatly aided by the fluky wind, which passed Haddow, and before the goalkeeper could clear Walker had rushed the ball through. Though playing with ten men, and one of these ten almost unfit for the work, the Rangers made some grand attacks, but they were overborne by superior numbers, and a fast game, which was not entirely free of roughness on both sides, ended – Hearts 4 goals: Rangers 2 goals.
