Match Trivia

These teams faced each other at Tontine Park. The weather was splendid, and a good number of spectators were present. Renton had materially improved their back division by a slight reconstruction of the team. At 3.57 the ground club set the ball in motion, and Steel picking up smartly, ran it over Renton lines. For fully 20 minutes the teams played hard for supremacy, but neither defence gave way. Gradually however the light blues worked the ball into close quarters, and Steel at a lucky moment landed the ball past Wilson into the net. Renton at once took up the cue, and dashing up Tait grazed the bar with a long shot. Fleming and Murray were soon at it again, however the latter crossing to McNee. This player centred well, and Bell being in a good position, equalised the game amid loud cheering. This success was almost followed by a better a few minutes later, when Murray just missed the post by inches. Towards halftime the Rangers looked dangerous and Gray shook the cross bar at Renton goal with a lightning shot. Halftime result – 1 each. The second portion of the game was not eight minutes old when Barker scored the winning goal for the Rangers. He caught McDermid napping, and ere the Renton man could realise the position the ball was in the net. The rest of the game was of great interest, and the desperate efforts of the ‘village lads’ roused their supporters. Smith and Drummond were very native, and made short work of their business, using their weight to advantage. McPherson received a knock in the early part of the game, and lacked some of his usual ‘go’. Steel and Barker were most prominent in front. The halfbacks placed and defended admirably. The Renton team all over is much improved, and are making rapid strides towards perfection. Result – Rangers 2: Renton 1.
