Match Trivia
The only undefeated League team renewed their acquaintance with Renton on the latter’s ground, the condition of which did not render footing by any means secure. The crowd was a large one; the weather was fine, although the sun was too bright. The Rangers were fortunate enough to win the toss, and of course took advantage of the elements. Against the wind and sun Bell set the leather in motion, and soon McCall the internationalist, was in evidence. He easily beat Gow, and darted towards Haddow’s goal, and passing across to Bell the latter shot in, but the Rangers custodian was not to be caught. The Rangers played for all they were worth, and sadly bothered the home teams defence, Lindsay at goal simply being impregnable. A splendid cross shot by Barker landed on H McCreadie head, and many thought the ball glanced through. It missed the target by inches only. A couple of corners in favour of the light blues were of no service. Mathieson was next in evidence, with Rankin in close attendance, but Scott was one too many for them, and again the visitors were peppering away at Lindsay’s goal, which escape unscathed, although the pressure was terribly exciting. It seemed as if Renton would never get rid of the attack, but thanks to the united efforts of the forwards, they beat down their opponents, and for several minutes gave the Rangers vanguard a very warm time of it, the spectators meanwhile shouting lustily. The game became an equal one, both teams battling hard for a point, and having the chances fairly divided amongst them. So far neither team had been successful, and the custodians and backs have to be thanked for this. A free kick just in front of Renton’s goal proved dangerous, but McCall (back) neutralised the try. As if chagrined, the Rangers came down in a body on Lindsay, the parting shot being entrusted to McPherson, who struck the crossbar with a terrific shot. The Light Blues new centre forward steered the ball through the goal after 35 minutes play. They did not enjoy their lead any length, for the Renton in noble fashion rushed down on Haddow, whose goal fell before a shot by Bell, who in the nick of time fastened on a pass by Rankin. After the interval, Haddow had some difficulty in negotiating a smart shot by Mathieson. To this the Rangers replied with a keen attack, but they were easily repulsed by A McCall, who is all right now. Shaking off their opponents, the Rangers in full sail bore down on Lindsay, and a corner was conceded. The kick was beautifully judged, and the ball landing on the head of H McCreadie, that player headed it through amidst cheers. Latterly the home team changed their tactics, and indulged in wide passing. Although they were successful in the open they failed to bring about the desired reward at close quarters. The game was now very fast, each team having much of the game as the other, with the goalkeepers getting numerous visits paid them. The result was a draw – 2 goals each.
