Match Trivia
The meeting of these teams at Ibrox Park, Govan brought out fully 5000 spectators. The weather was first class for the event although a strong breeze was blowing. The Rangers had the assistance of Frank Watt the famous Kilbirnie International forward. Losing the toss the Rangers kicked off against the wind. Kerr passed to Henderson, who in turn gave the ball to Watt. That player put in a good run. He centred well, but Smyllie conceded a corner. The place kick was sent behind. Annbank next took up the running, and just as George Kerr was steadying himself to shoot A McCreadie stepped in and sent the ball into touch. McPherson was next prominent for the Rangers. He sent in a swift shot, which Fitzsimmons just managed to get away. Again the Annbank had a chance, but their shots were met my Haddow, who was ably assisted by Dunbar. They Ayrshire lads obtained a corner, bit it came to nothing. The Rangers now began to press their opponents severly, and but for the splendid goalkeeping of Fitzsimons they would have scored. The high wind also spoiled their shooting. At last after one of McPherson’s runs he passed out to Watt. Who with a screw shot scored the first goal for the Rangers. Immediately after Colville had a try at Haddow charge, but the ball went behind. Annbank strove hard to equalise, but the Rangers defence was too good for them. Halftime result – Rangers 1 goal: Annbank 0.
The second half was resumed with vigour, the Annbank having the wind against them. At the outset the Rangers took up the running. Twice in succession Mitchell sent the ball over the bar. Walter Dunlop next had a try for Annbank, but his shot went wide. After this several corners fell to the Rangers. Time after time it looked as if the ‘light blues’ must score, but luck was against them. At last H McCreadie placed a nice corner, and the ball was rushed through for the second time. Immediately after Fitzsimmons had to concede another corner, but nothing came of it, Gourlay heading the ball out of danger. The Annbank seldom got as far as midfield. Colville was the only forward on their side who seemed to make any progress, but Marshall kept him in check. The redeeming feature in the Annbank’s display was the brilliant defence of Fitzsimons, Henderson and Smyllie. For the Rangers Dunbar, A McCreadie, Watt and McPherson played in rare form. No further scoring took place. Final result – Rangers 2 goals: Annbank 0
