Match Trivia

These teams met at Bank Park, Leith to play their league fixture. M McQueen and A McCreadie, who were assisting in the match against Canada, were absentees from their respective sides. Marshall unfortunately missed the train, and Muir was called upon to fill the vacancy. The weather was splendid, and there was a large turnout of spectators. The game was for a time confined to midfield. A run by the Rangers was well stopped by McCartney. The Rangers were not to be repulsed, and Burnside had some anxious till Stevenson relieved. The game was very fast, the passing play of the Rangers being excellent. A dangerous run by Athletic ended in Haddow cleverly catching a deadly shot and sending the ball out. Play was transferred to midfield. The Athletic colours were about lowered, the Rangers having hard lines in not scoring. Even play ensured till halftime, when the result was – Athletic 0: Rangers 0. After crossing over, a run by the Rangers proved dangerous, and Burnside falling, Kerr took the opportunity of scoring the first goal. A foul after the kick-out against the Rangers enabled Scott to equalise. For a time Leith pressed, but were unable to break through the Rangers defence. A foul in front of the Rangers goals let Mathieson put on a second point for Leith. Long interchanges followed, in which the Athletic held their own. A severe tussle afterwards took place at the Rangers goal, the ball going past, but grazing the outside of the post. Fine passing by the Rangers forwards ought to have been productive, but the raid was cleverly stopped by Anderson. The Athletic worked their way to the Rangers ground, and caused the backs some trouble, McQueen being very conspicuous in his attempts to score. Their ender sours were at last rewarded, Scott sending in the third goal. Result – Athletic 3 goals: Rangers 1 goal.
