Match Trivia

On Ibrox Park these teams met for the fifth time this season, both teams were strongly represented. The Rangers won the toss, and Lapsley set the ball in motion. The Volunteers rushed away, but were brought up by the opposing halves, and the Light Blues immediately changed the scene of action. So well did they work up field that for a time the Third’s goal looked likely to succumb? As the game progressed the Rangers were undoubtedly having the best of it. They got a corner, which, being well placed caused the Volunteers no end of trouble, Love who was in good form, just clearing in the nick of time. The Volunteers were soon in their opponenets territory, but only temporarily, as the Rangers again came away, and combining well, Allan got a chance but kicked behind. A well-sustained run down by the Third nearly proved successful as Burke, who caught a neat pass, just missed the mark by a few inches, the ball going over the bar. Near the close of the first half the Rangers scored, Allan sending the ball through from a pass by Wyllie. The Third immediately warmed up, and a scrimmage took place at the Rangers goal, but Reid soon seen the ball in hand, and clearing splendidly, the Light Blues transferred the play. The Volunteers however, were certainly improving, but Allan rattled off up the field, and had lines in not scoring. At halftime the score stood in favour of the Rangers by 1 goal to 0. No time was lost in recommencing, and within a minute from the start Downie had to save a splendid shot from Wyllie at the expense of a corner. A minute later Downie had again to save, and the Third got clear, and Reid had in turn to kick out. After this play was more even. The Third got a corner, on which however they could not improve, and the play settled down on the run and counter-runs principal. The front rank of the Rangers played splendidly, especially Allan, McCreadie and Wyllie, the last mentioned playing vigorously and judiciously, although he was well looked after by his opponenets. Hay and Hendry proved as good as usual, and Reid did the little he had to do in a creditable manner. On the other hand, the Volunteers forward division seemed slack and disjoined, but their back division played magnificently. Downie who had more to do than his opponents at the other end, saved very well indeed. The last ten minutes of the game was stiffly contested, the Volunteers striving had to make a draw. Marshall (Rangers) headed through a beauty just on the call of time. The result was – Rangers 2 goals; 3rd Lanark 0.
