Match Trivia
Played at Blackburn. Although not a League fixture fully 8,000 people assembled, among them being a good sprinkling of Scotchmen. The Rovers did not set much store on the match, four of their first team men being absent and a stranger in goal, in the person of Law of Denton. Lofthouse, Townley, Baton and Dewar were the absentees. The Rangers had their full team, with the exception of Allan, whose lace was filled by Gow. Losing the toss, the Rovers put the ball in motion and began to press, forcing the first corner, which proved fruitless. Keeping the upper hand, the Rovers put the ball through, but no goal was allowed, the player being off-side. A little later Southworth shot, but Reid cleared, only just managing to avoid a charge through by Walton. Although the Rovers had the best of the lay in midfield and pinned their opponents, their shooting at goal was very indifferent, and several chances were thrown away. In this respect the Rangers were worse if anything. Brandon and Forbes played a good game, especially the former. Forbes was beaten several time, but this was due in some cases to his trying to do too much. Play became slow, the Rovers doing most of the pressing, but they were unable to put the ball through, and the teams crossed over even, no goal being scored. In the second half, the Rangers played better, and forced a number of corners, which all came to nothing. After some even lay, they made a well-sustained attack and came near to scoring. Time after time they returned the ball with a laudable persistence, but the Rovers managed to prevent it going through, though they could not get it far away. The danger was increased when hands were given against the home team, and again quite a fusillade was kept up on the Rovers citadel. Ultimately the Rovers cleared, and play slowed down. Just ten minutes from the call of time, out of a scrimmage, the home team scored the first goal. Just before the whistle blew, Gow missed a ridiculously chance of equalising, and the Rangers retired defeated by one goal to nothing.
