Match Trivia
The evening fixture between these teams came off last night at Ibrox Park. Owing to the disagreeable nature of the weather, the attendance of spectators was not very large at the start, but as time wore on it was considerably increased. A few minutes after the advertised time the Rovers having lost the toss, kicked off towards the west goal. The Rangers at once took up the running, and looked like scoring, but Forbes interfered and transferred the play to the other end. Mitchell tried a shot, but Ritchie was all there. Again the Rovers got near, but the ball was sent behind. From the kick-off Wyllie and Wilkie got on the ball. The later finished up a splendid run by cantering to Oswald who sent in a scorcher, which went through far out of McOwen’s reach. This success of the Rangers was received with cheers. The home team continued to press, but their efforts were nullified by the splendid defence of Robinson and Forbes. Gradually the Rovers drew an away, Southworth tried a shot, but Gow conceded a corner. Still keeping at it the Rovers had very hard lines. Three corner kicks in succession were given them. Nothing could be done with them however. The game at this stage became very slow. Halftime sounded with the ball in midfield, and the Rangers leading by 1 goal to 0. On re-starting, the play still continued slowly, neither team showing to advantage. Mackie missed a good chance by hanging on the ball too long. Twenty minutes after the resumption of hostilities, Haresnape finished up a good run by beating Ritchie, who was well looked after by Southworth. The game was thus equalised. The Rovers continued to have the best of the game, and had it not been for the defence of Ritchie they would have increased their score. Towards the close the Rangers put on a spurt, and Oswald had several tries, but he was well watched. Just on time the Rangers got a free kick twenty yards from the Rovers goal. The ball was well placed. After dodging about it was sent over the bar. The whistle sounded with the score – Rangers 1 goal, Blackburn Rovers 1 goal.
